The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has assured the Actors Guild Of Nigeria of due protection for their intellectual Property.
The Federal Government has made assurances to help the motion pictures industry guard against intellectual theft and piracy. The protection of intellectual property will improve the productivity of the Movie industry.
Dr. Onu said this when the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja on Tuesday.
Dr. Onu also said that the adoption of technology will enhance the technical outputs of the motion pictures industry, as well as improve the nation’s image and help in diversifying the nations economy.
The Minister described Nollywood as representing the very best ideals Nigeria can offer to the world, adding that Nollywood is a wonderful export and brand for Nigeria.
On deployment of technology to improve nollywood, the Minister said the production of satellite technology will help improve movie distribution, picture quality and other technical areas that will enhance Nollywood’s capacity.
He mentioned that agencies of the Ministry such as National Office for Technological Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) and National Space Research Development Agency (NASRDA) would be on hand to develop appropriate technologies to boost the productivity of the motion pictures industry.
Dr. Onu urged the practitioners to boost their increased creativity. Adding that increased creativity will make nollywood the best in the world.
“We believe that if you improve on what you do, you will become more creative and enhanced, as Nigeria believe that Nollywood will be the best movie industry in the world”
He further hailed the Actors Guild for contributing positively towards Nation-Building. “Supporting Nollywood is in the best interest of Nigeria, especially in revenue generation and creating employment opportunities for Nigerians”.
Earlier, the president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Mr. Emeka Rollas said his guild was seeking for a mutual beneficial partnership with the Ministry so as to improve technological advancement of the motion picture industry in Nigeria.
Mr. Rollas acknowledged the role of technology as significant in modern film distribution and reduce the risk for piracy and intellectual theft.
He advocated for the Ministry’s technological assistance to create platforms that will aid movie distribution and showcase Nigerian movies to the world.
